"It was very intriguing, but as we thought about it, we decided doing a rifle shot approach didn't make any sense," Williams said, noting it saw additional offers of interest after that. MOT initially was contacted by a single, reputable developer with very specific plans, he said. "To the extent we can work with a developer to help us achieve those things, that's where we want to be." "We have many needs and projects under way that are expensive," including updates to the historic Detroit Opera House. "Obviously we find ourselves in a hot spot in Detroit," MOT Chairman Rick Williams said. The historic Detroit Opera House, which MOT's late founder David DiChiera brought back to life, is not included in the RFP. Proposals could cover both the surface lot and the parking center or could be separate proposals. MOT said it is open to modification of the parking garage, which was built in 2006 and has space for 700 cars. The proposed development site is located within walking distance of Detroit's sports arenas, the Detroit Athletic Club, the QLine, Woodward Avenue and Grand Circus Park.

The nonprofit opera company is looking for proposals for mixed-use projects that could include a mid-to-high-rise tower housing a hotel, office space, apartments, condominiums, ground floor retail/restaurants and underground parking. MOT has invited 30-40 local and out-of-state developers to submit proposals for development of the 0.8-acre site next to the Detroit Opera House, between Madison and Broadway streets, under a longterm lease, and for the Detroit Opera House Parking Center at the corner of Broadway and John R streets. Spurred by interest over the past year and financial realities, the Michigan Opera Theatre is seeking development proposals for a surface parking lot adjacent to the Detroit Opera House and for its nearby seven-story parking garage.
